Tips for writing a great job description to attract exceptional talent

In today’s market, much attention is given to job seekers and ensuring they find the most suitable positions. Let’s shift our focus to employers for a moment.
What can an employer do to make sure they are attracting the right talent; it all starts with the position description.

A well-crafted position description is a vital tool in the hiring process. It not only attracts the right candidates but also sets clear expectations for the role. Make sure you create a position description that effectively communicates the actual job requirements, true responsibilities, and of course what’s in it for them, always add any unique opportunities your company offers.

Start with a clear job title. This should be specific and reflect the nature of the role. Avoid internally focused titles that aren’t understandable and may confuse potential candidates. A clear job title helps candidates quickly understand the role.

Grab the candidate’s attention by providing an engaging summary, highlighting what makes this position unique and appealing. It’s a few short sentences, providing an overview of the role, its main purpose and how it fits into your organization.

List the primary duties and responsibilities associated with the role, by detailing key responsibilities. Bullet points are easy to read and offer clarity. This section should give candidates a clear idea of what their day-to-day tasks will involve.

Are skills or Qualifications required? If so, these should be listed what skills or qualifications are needed for to be successful in this role. Distinguish between ‘required’ and ‘preferred’ qualifications, to give candidates a better understand of what is necessary Vs. what is advantageous. This section should include educational level, professional experience, and / or specific skills. This may include both hard skills (e.g., specific computer software knowledge, technical expertise) and soft skills (e.g., communication, teamwork).

People’s needs and wants, have shifted throughout the years, therefore describing the work environment is crucial. What’s in it for them and what makes you stand out from the rest? This helps candidates understand the company culture and benefits should include whether the role is remote, hybrid, on-site and any other relevant details about the work conditions. Where possible, provide the salary (or it’s range). This transparency will help attract candidates who are serious about the role and align with the company’s compensation structure.

Make sure you end your position description with an encouraging statement. This emphasizes your commitment to creating an inclusive workplace.
Always ensure your job description is well laid out, easy to read and understand.

2. Use bullet points for clarity
3. Use concise and direct language and avoid jargon
4. Maintain consistent formatting throughout the job description. Use the same font type and size, uniform bullet points and standard spacing.
5. Use bold or italic text to highlight key information.
6. Incorporate white space to prevent the job description from appearing cluttered.
7. Choose a readable font style and size and avoid decorative fonts that might be difficult to read. A standard, professional font such as Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman, in a size between 11 and 12 points is usually a good choice.
8. Ensure the information flows logically from one section to the next. Start with the job title and summary, then move on to responsibilities, qualifications and so on.
9. Where possible, provide examples to clarify responsibilities and expectations.
10. Proofread the job description to eliminate any spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors. Mistakes will make the document look unprofessional and will not be attractive to potential candidates.
